Artists Statement

I’m ostensibly an abstract painter influenced as much by nature as I am by popular culture. My work emerges from a distillation of these currents, of time and place, into quietly persuasive painted objects. They may allude to the world at large but I want them to exist independently, behaving like pre-sentient forms that are as self contained as they are expansive.

The best work comes from limited means and endless choices. I’m interested in what is still possible with just paint and a modest support. I work serially, accumulating ideas and responses over multiple forms that are executed quickly and revised endlessly. When the allusion to reality is too literal, the world falls flat. The idea is to find a balanced visual truth that can straddle the silly and the serious into a kind of cartoon sublime.
